Das "Empire of Illusions" ist das Reich der Träume und Traumwelten, die wir jede Nacht im Schlaf erschaffen. Im Traum hat das Bewußtsein an Kontrolle verloren und es kommen Dinge aus dem Unterbewußtsein zum Vorschein, schnelle Assoziationen, verdrängte Gedanken und noch mehr, was aus einer faszinierenden, zugleich fremden und vertrauten Welt zu stammen scheint...
Warum genau wir träumen ist der Wissenschaft
noch unklar, daß es aber in irgendeiner Form lebenswichtig ist, daran
besteht kein Zweifel.
In vielen alten Kulturen hat der Traum
eine wichtige, teils religiöse Bedeutung: In der "Dreamtime" der Aborigines,
oder auch in vielen Texten der Bibel, bis hin zu den philosophischen Erkenntnissen
von Platon oder Aristoteles.
Immer wieder haben Forscher versucht, den Traum als einen rein physiologischen (mechanisch-körperlichen) Vorgang darzustellen, einer Art "Aufräumen des Gehirns", dessen Inhalt zufällig und bedeutungslos sei. Aber spätestens seit Sigmund Freuds Theorien zur Traumdeutung ist auch die Wissenschaft verstärkt auf der Suche nach dem psychologischen Sinn des Traumes, mit zum Teil recht umstrittenen Ergebnissen.
Aber wenn wir uns an einen Traum erinnern
eröffnen sich uns Zugänge zu unserer unbewußten Phantasiewelt,
zu verborgenen Erinnerungen, Kindheitswünschen, unbewältigten
Ängsten und auch zur Quelle unserer Kreativität.
Indem sie Anstöße gibt zu eigenen
Assoziationen und der Phantasie Raum läßt, um ihre eigenen Wege
zu gehen, kann Musik die Kontaktaufnahme mit der Traumwelt unterstützen
und man erlebt sozusagen "Kopfkino aus dem Ich"!
Diese CD ist in einer neuartigen, sehr aufwendigen Aufnahmetechnik produziert (binaurale Aufnahme), die einen realistischen, dreidimensionalen Raumeindruck vermittelt und über handelsübliche Kopfhörer eine Rundumortung von Klängen ermöglicht. Dadurch ergibt sich für den Hörer ein sehr intensiver Eindruck, da er sich mittendrin in einer Art akustischem Hologramm fühlt. Diese CD ist natürlich auch über Lautsprecher zu genießen, aber der dreidimensionale Effekt vermag sich dann nur eingeschränkt zu entfalten. Man kann das 3D-Erlebnis noch verbessern, wenn man für eine ruhige Umgebung mit wenig Ablenkung für die Augen sorgt, oder eventuell den Raum verdunkelt.

Das sagen die Kritiken bisher :
"Bislang war der in München lebende
Komponist und Toningenieur Christian Schimmöller ein Garant für
flauschige Fantasy-Instrumentals; nicht umsonst hat er sein Pseudonym dem
Tolkien-Epos "Der Herr der Ringe" entlehnt. Daher konnte man kaum auf das
vorbereitet sein, was Palantír auf seinem neuen, seit 1991 erst
dritten Soloalbum inszeniert: einen alle tod-sichere "EM"-Rezepturen ignorierenden
Klangfilm mit Staunen erregenden 3D-Effekten. "Empire of Illusions" kommt
als Binaural Recording und bedarf, empfiehlt der Künstler zu Recht,
eines "hochwertigen offenen diffusfeldentzerrten" Kopfhörers für
optimalen Genuss. Wer den Rat beherzigt, kommt aus dem Staunen nicht heraus.
Auch wenn nicht jede melodische Idee zündet (die Lead-Linien der Tracks
1 und 2, "Fantasy & Reason" und "Under the Silverwheel", hätten
origineller ausfallen können), ist Schimmöller etwas Großes
gelungen: ein von virtuoser Beherrschung der Disziplin "Sampling" zeugendes
Album, dessen knapp 18-minütiges Titelstück (Track 3) nicht einen
Takt langweilt - wann hatten wir das zuletzt? Auf ein Fundament aus
statischen, meditativen Glockenpatterns schichtet Schimmöller/Palantír
Synthi-Akkorde, Rhythmus-Sequenzen und Geräusche, die dramatisch illustrieren,
was zwei Sprechstimmen (männlich/weiblich) eher beiläufig deklamieren:
Worte, die es dem Hörer überlassen, wie er sie deuten möchte.
Traumsymbole wie "the heart", "the pearl", "the dress" und "the mirror"
sind es, die zur freien Assoziation einladen. Und wie ist das gemacht!
Den fast mit Surround-Power aufs Ohr klatschenden "water"-Noise muss man
gehört haben, um ihn zu "glauben". Unterm Strich ist das aber nicht
nur ein faszinierendes Hörerlebnis - auf einem Klang-Niveau mit den
letzten Produktionen von Enigma und Oldfield, diesen indes an musikalischem
Einfallsreichtum weit überlegen! -, sondern auch ein Grund zum
Jubel für das zuletzt im "EM"-Mittelmaß dümpelnde Mini-Label
Spheric Music. Mit "Empire of Illusions" hat ihm Palantír ein kleines
Wunderwerk beschert. Hoffentlich stimmt das Promotion-Budget, damit nicht
nur die enge Szene, sondern auch die weite Welt davon erfährt."

Nach sechs langen Jahren nun erscheint
seine zweite CD ,Empire of Illusionsė, die in vielerlei Hinsicht außergewöhnlich
ist. Palantir hat mit viel Liebe zum Detail eine Traumwelt geschaffen,
die durchaus als Anleitung zu luzidem Träumen durchgehen kann. Man
merkt dem Musiker an, daß er sich viel Zeit für das Thema genommen
hat und die Stücke nicht überladen hat, obwohl sein im Beiheft
aufgelistetes elektronisches Equipment dies ahnen lässt. Wir finden
auf ,Empire...ė feine, schwebende und sehr zerbrechliche Klänge, kaum
Sequenzer-Stakkati und Drum-Loops, dafür pures Erleben, Gefühle
und Emotionen, die mich in dieser Perfektion verblüfft haben.
Die Gratwanderung zwischen einer perfekten Produktion (3-D-Aufnahme !)
und gefühlvoller Musik ist hier vorbildlich in Szene gesetzt
und geglückt ! Die schöne und originelle Aufmachung der CD, versehen
mit Texten des Komponisten, runden das Bild einer sehr erfreulichen Veröffentlichung
ab, von der man hofft, daß sie nicht im Wust der Veröffentlichungen
untergeht."

The "Empire of Illusions" is the realm
of dreams and dreamworlds, which we create each night in our sleep. Within
a dream our consciousness loses its control allowing things from the subconscious
to appear. Quick associations emerge, repressed thoughts and more, that
seems to belong to a strange, fascinating but at the same time also
familiar world...
Scientists are still not exactly sure
why we dream but there is no doubt that it is essential for our survival.
In many old cultures dreams have an important,
sometimes even religious meaning: There's the "Dreamtime" of the Aborigines,
some texts of the christian Bible or the philosophical cognitions of Plato
and Aristotle.
Time and again scientists try to explain
dreaming as a purely physiological (body-functional) process, a sort of
brain "spring cleaning" with meaningless content. But since Sigmund Freud
published his theories of dream interpretation also other scientists started
looking for the psychological meaning of dreams. The results of these researches
are object to heavy discussions, though.
When we remeber a dream we open a pathway
to our subconscious fantasy-world, to hidden memories, childhood desires,
unfinished fears and also to the heart of our creativity.
By triggering own associations and providing
space for the fantasy to unfold music can support getting in touch with
the dreamworld and you can experience sort of a "brain-movie from the self"!
This CD has been produced using a new sophisticated recording technique (binaural recording), which provides a realistic, threedimensional impression of space while listening on normal stereo-headphones. The intensity of the sound experience is highly improved, the listener finds himself inside an acoustic hologram. Of course you can enjoy this CD also when played on loudspeakers but the 3D-effect will not fully unfold. The 3D-effect can be improved by choosing a quiet listening environment with only little visual distraction and eventually dimming the lights.

"Until now the composer and audio-engineer
Christian Schimmöller, who lives in Munich, guaranteed for fluffy
Fantasy-instrumentals, adding the fact that he took his pseudonym from
the Tokien-epic "The Lord of the Rings". Therefore you could not be prepared
for what Palantír sets on stage on his only third solo-album since
1991: A sound-movie with astouding 3D-effects that ignores all sure-thing
"EM"-recepies. "Empire of Illusions" is a "binaural recording" and needs
"high-fidelity open" headphones for optimum enjoyment, as the artist recommends
correctly. Who pays attention to this advise will be amazed over and over
again. Even if not every melodic idea succeeds (the lead-lines in tracks
1 and 2 could have been more original), Schimmöller created something
great: an album that shows a virtuous knowledge in "Sampling"-techniques,
while its almost 18-minutes long title-track contains not a single boring
bar - can you remember the last time we had something like this? On
a base of meditavie static bell-patterns Schimmöller/Palantír
builds synth-chords, rhythmic sequences and noises, dramatically illustrating
what two announcers (male/female) recite more or less casually: Words that
leave it with the listener how to read them. Dream-symbols like "the heart",
"the pearl", "the dress" and "the mirror" invite for free association.
And how good this is made! You have to have heard the almost with surround-power
around your ears slapping "water"-noise by yourself to "believe" it. Altogether
this is not only a fascinating listening-adventure - on the same high sound-quality
level with the latest Enigma and Oldfield productions, but as it comes
to musical imagination far superior to these! -, but a reason of rejoice
for the mini-label Spheric Music that lately more or less stumbled around
"EM"-mediocrity. With "Empire of Illusions" Palantír has blessed
it with a little miracle. Let's hope that the budget for promotion is right,
for that not only the narrow "scene" but the whole wide world gets to know
of this album."

composer and audio-engineer Christian Schimmöller who lives in Munich.
After six long years he presents his second CD "Empire of Illusions", that
is extraordinary in many ways. With much concern for detail Palantír
created a dream-world that could be taken as an introduction to lucid dreaming.
You can see that the musician has taken much time to deal with this thematic
and that the songs are not overfilled, even if his electronic equipment
listed in the booklet seems to suggest this. On "Empire..." you can find
fine, floating very fragile sounds, almost no sequencer-stakkati and drum-loops,
but pure experience, feelings and emotion, that have stunned me by their
perfection. The tip-toe between a perfect production (3D-recording!)
and emotional, heartfelt music is put into scene ideally - and successfully!
The beautiful and unique cover of the cd with added texts by the composer,
complete the picture of a very pleasing production and I hope that it doesn't
get lost under the massive mess of publications."
