"Bislang war der in München lebende Komponist und Toningenieur Christian Schimmöller ein Garant für flauschige Fantasy-Instrumentals; nicht umsonst hat er sein Pseudonym dem Tolkien-Epos "Der Herr der Ringe" entlehnt. Daher konnte man kaum auf das vorbereitet sein, was Palantír auf seinem neuen, seit 1991 erst dritten Soloalbum inszeniert: einen alle tod-sichere "EM"-Rezepturen ignorierenden Klangfilm mit Staunen erregenden 3D-Effekten. "Empire of Illusions" kommt als Binaural Recording und bedarf, empfiehlt der Künstler zu Recht, eines "hochwertigen offenen diffusfeldentzerrten" Kopfhörers für optimalen Genuss. Wer den Rat beherzigt, kommt aus dem Staunen nicht heraus. Auch wenn nicht jede melodische Idee zündet (die Lead-Linien der Tracks 1 und 2, "Fantasy & Reason" und "Under the Silverwheel", hätten origineller ausfallen können), ist Schimmöller etwas Großes gelungen: ein von virtuoser Beherrschung der Disziplin "Sampling" zeugendes Album, dessen knapp 18-minütiges Titelstück (Track 3) nicht einen Takt langweilt - wann hatten wir das zuletzt? Auf ein Fundament aus statischen, meditativen Glockenpatterns schichtet Schimmöller/Palantír Synthi-Akkorde, Rhythmus-Sequenzen und Geräusche, die dramatisch illustrieren, was zwei Sprechstimmen (männlich/weiblich) eher beiläufig deklamieren: Worte, die es dem Hörer überlassen, wie er sie deuten möchte. Traumsymbole wie "the heart", "the pearl", "the dress" und "the mirror" sind es, die zur freien Assoziation einladen. Und wie ist das gemacht! Den fast mit Surround-Power aufs Ohr klatschenden "water"-Noise muss man gehört haben, um ihn zu "glauben". Unterm Strich ist das aber nicht nur ein faszinierendes Hörerlebnis - auf einem Klang-Niveau mit den letzten Produktionen von Enigma und Oldfield, diesen indes an musikalischem Einfallsreichtum weit überlegen! -, sondern auch ein Grund zum Jubel für das zuletzt im "EM"-Mittelmaß dümpelnde Mini-Label Spheric Music. Mit "Empire of Illusions" hat ihm Palantír ein kleines Wunderwerk beschert. Hoffentlich stimmt das Promotion-Budget, damit nicht nur die enge Szene, sondern auch die weite Welt davon erfährt."

Dream-symbols like "the heart", "the pearl", "the dress" and "the mirror" invite for free association. And how well is this made! You have to have heard the "water"-noise slapping on your ears almost with surround-power by yourself to "believe" it. Taken all in all this is not only a fascinating acoustic-adventure - on the same high sound-quality level with the latest Enigma and Oldfield productions, but as it comes to musical imagination far superior to these! -, but also reason to rejoice for the mini-label Spheric Music more or less stumbling around "EM"-mediocrity. This is all well and good, of course, but what about the music? Honestly, I'm still digesting it. It is a multi-layered work full of imagery. [...] As I started to delve deeper and listen again, I began to appreciate the craftsmanship that Christian Schimmöller, a.k.a. Palantir, put into it. In a remote sense, I'm reminded of Jean-Michel Jarre's most experimental album, 'Zoolook'. Palantir explains that 'Empire of Illusions' is all about dreams and dreamworlds. The almost 80-minute disc is a kaleidoscope of sonic images, created largely by background noise and vocal samples, in addition to music with generally uplifting melodies. Each track joins the next with a minute or so of ambient noise, talking, animals, and other sounds. Actually, these short bridges of sounds are very interesting in and of themselves, although it is where some of the excesses in the binaural recording occur. Sometimes it fits, and sometimes it just seems like noise. But then, it's not unlike some dreams I have, where I'm suddenly whisked away to another location, and for the life of me I can't figure out how the dream transitioned from point A to point B. Palantir maintains a mostly light and bright mood throughout, one might even say dreamy. Spend some time with this one to reap its rewards. Unique and recommended."

The CD was recorded using a new recording technique (called binaural recording), which provides a 3D-sound, even by using ordinary speakers/headphones. All through the album you'll find effects and sounds that are absolutely unbelievable (like someone walking down the stairs instead of the "simple" walk from left to right speakers). The press-info compares it to an acoustic hologram, and I believe this is a nice description. About the music: most of it are pleasant melodies, often on the rather upbeat side, but we also encounter scary sounds (after all, besides joyful dreams also nightmares occur every once in a while) and more reflective and meditative moments. The center piece of the disc is the 18 minute title track, which involves some interesting spoken words in various languages (like a long Dutch story), tribal chanting, effects like jungle birds and several dream-symbols (like the sword, time, etc.) are announced by a male and a female narrator with accompanying sound effects.
